|Access, Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity (AIDE) Roadmap|
Diversity Abroad's AIDE Roadmap is both a set of diversity and inclusive good practice guidelines as well as an intensive self-assessment tool that is designed to help education abroad offices document and assess their diversity and inclusion practices, and serve as a guide for implementing policies and practices that will help offices achieve their diversity and inclusion goals.
Diversity Abroad has devised a set of guidelines for diversity and inclusion in education abroad in order to provide professionals a guide for implementing policies and practices that are both aspirational and practical.
These guidelines are informed by the Access, Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity in International Education (AIDE) Evaluation created by the Diversity Abroad Network in 2011. The AIDE Roadmap is an intensive self-assessment that examines the diversity within the education abroad office, how the office conducts outreach, collaborates with different campus units, works with third-party organizations, and provides financial assistance to students of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Completing the AIDE Roadmap is the first step in investigating how an institution’s procedures and policies may encourage or discourage diverse students to pursue education abroad opportunities.
The Diversity Abroad AIDE Roadmap is a voluntary, self-reporting framework for recognizing and gauging relative progress toward diversity and inclusion for organizations, colleges, and universities involved in education abroad programs. It is designed to:
The Diversity Abroad AIDE Roadmap process is intended to engage and recognize the full spectrum of colleges and universities in the United States as well as education abroad providers. Additionally, it is intended to involve those just starting their efforts toward diversity and inclusion in education abroad to long-time diversity and inclusion leaders.
The guidelines are intended to cover the following areas within offices, departments, and organizations working in education abroad and international education.
The AIDE Roadmap is an important step toward developing and improving effective policies and procedures to increase participation and improving services for diverse and underrepresented students in education abroad. Institutions who have gone through the rigorous self-assessment are invited to participate in the AIDE Evaluation to receive specific feedback and recommendations to improve areas of need identified by the Roadmap.

1. Generate new ideas
Whether your institution is just getting started with diversity and inclusion efforts in your international education activities or if it is a leader in issues of diversity and inclusion in education abroad, the AIDE Roadmap will help you identify good practices that you can pursue and implement on your campus.
2. Engage your community
The process of completing the AIDE Roadmap is intensive and is intended to contribute to other international education and diversity and inclusion efforts on your campus and can be used to engage students, staff, faculty, and administrators in creating/expanding a culture of inclusion and global mindedness on campus.
3. Create a baseline for improvement
The AIDE Roadmap will allow you to comprehensively measure your institution’s current diversity and inclusion performance and assess your progress, both internally and in comparison to peer institutions.
4. Inform strategic planning and budgeting
The AIDE Roadmap can serve as a framework to help integrate diversity and inclusion into your institution’s planning and development efforts as well as a rationale for funding of specific programming/initiatives.
5. Make real progress toward diversity and inclusion
Benchmarking and measuring progress across time will help your institution monitor and track its progress towards diversity and inclusion efforts in education abroad, and in some cases, help the institution develop more concrete and specific goals related to diversity and inclusion.
6. Gain recognition for your diversity and inclusion efforts
Participating in the AIDE Roadmap can help build public recognition of your institution's’ efforts to increase access to education abroad opportunities and enhance support to students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds in education abroad. Institutions who participate in the AIDE Roadmap have the option to be listed on the Diversity Abroad Network and receive a participation logo to place on your institution’s website.
7. Be part of a community of AIDE Roadmap Institutions
By completing the AIDE Roadmap, your institution will be able to engage with institutions who share your institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The full version of the AIDE Roadmap is available to Diversity Abroad Network Member Institutions. The tool is hosted on an online format where members will be able to input responses to specific questions and indicators. Upon successful completion of the AIDE Roadmap, institutions receive a custom report that includes strengths and areas for improvement. Institutions will also see how their scores align with others who have completed the AIDE Roadmap, providing a general idea of how they compare to similar institutions.

How does my information remain confidential?
Based on feedback from pilot institutions, completion of the AIDE Roadmap may take between 10 and 14 hours.
Should this be completed by one staff member? A team or committee?
It can be advantageous to designate one staff person as the project manager to guide a committee in completing the AIDE Roadmap. Information and data will need to be gathered from multiple campus units which will require a collaborative effort.
How does my information remain confidential?
Scores from participating institutions are blindly aggregated. Institutions can gauge progress by comparing scores to other similar institutions (based on student enrollment and institution type); however, institutional names are not made public. Institution's score and overall rating will only be reported with the consent of the institution.
What if we are just beginning our efforts toward Diversity and Inclusion in Education Abroad? Should we wait to participate until our efforts have become more institutionalized?
