Diversity Abroad 2016 EDIE Award Recipients: James M. Pasquill II, Miami Dade College, IES Abroad

BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, March 17, 2016 — Diversity Abroad is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIE) Awards. On an annual basis,the EDIE Awards recognize those who, through dedication, innovation and persistence, are achieving the ideals stated in the Diversity Abroad mission, that the next generation of young people from diverse and underserved backgrounds have equitable access to global educational opportunities that will prepare them for success in the 21st century.

Chosen from recommendations made by Diversity Abroad Network member institutions, this year’s recipients have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity and inclusive excellence within international education on an individual, institutional, and organizational level; the EDIE Award celebrates these achievements.

The winners will be presented with their awards at the 4th Annual Diversity Abroad Conference, From Outreach to Support: Navigating Expansion and Inclusion, in Atlanta, Georgia on April 5, 2016. Brief descriptions of the recipients for the individual, institutional and organizational awards are stated below.

INDIVIDUAL AWARD: James M. Pasquill II, University at Albany

The EDIE Individual Award honors those who have made a personal commitment to fostering diversity and inclusive good practices in international education. The 2016 EDIE Individual Award is awarded to James M. Pasquill II, the Director of Education Abroad of the University at Albany. A ten-year veteran of his post, Pasquill has been nominated — and selected — due to his commitment to creating an inclusive environment in the University at Albany’s study abroad program, on both a programming and personal level. Notably, he has worked to create interdepartmental relationships between his office and the Equal Opportunity Program (EOP) and Collegiate Science Entry Program (C-STEP). Working with EOP, study abroad participation rates among this student population have increased dramatically, going from only a handful EOP students going abroad a decade ago to comprising 7% of all UAlbany international education participants — and on a larger scale, under his leadership, minority students have grown to account for 30% of the school’s study abroad participants. At the financial level, he helped support and co-author a scholarship with the Institute of International Education to help fund underrepresented students’ programs abroad.

On behalf of Mr. Pasquill, Dr. Harvey Charles, Dean and Vice Provost for International Education and Global Strategy, University at Albany, stated: “James has dedicated his career to creating opportunities for study abroad for the most underrepresented populations at the university. Throughout his tenure as both program coordinator and Director he has sought, and continues to seek, to create new opportunities that would better serve a diverse student population, specifically through creative financing and targeted programming design.”

INSTITUTIONAL AWARD: Miami Dade College

The EDIE Institutional Award for 2016 is awarded to Miami Dade College (MDC). As a higher education institution with more than 165,000 students, the college plays a fundamental role in connecting the area’s diverse group of students to education abroad opportunities. The College’s Office of International Education units -- encompassing the Confucius Institute, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives, and the Office of Study Abroad -- together offer over 100 different study abroad programs, all targeted towards students of diverse backgrounds and academic fields of study. Though the majority of MDC students represent groups that traditionally have been underrepresented in study abroad, MDC’s focus on faculty-led study abroad programming has led to an increase in overall study abroad participation. Interdepartmental partnerships have been a key component of the success at Miami Dade College — partnerships with the Marketing department helped rebrand international education, and engaging with faculty sparked a 75% increase in faculty-led programming. These changes manifested not only in rising participation, but a shift in interest from European cities to more non-traditional, Asian study abroad locations, as well as a rise in STEM students taking part. Other international endeavors included creating the Diaspora Knowledge Remittance Study Abroad program, which connects non-traditional health sciences students to their countries of heritage.

Tatiana Mackliff, the Executive Director of International Education at Miami Dade College, referenced the significance of the EDIE award: “Diversity is the cornerstone of the mission of Miami Dade College. This award not only encourages us to meet our responsibility to expand access to international education opportunities for our students, but it supports our strategic resolution to build a globally competent workforce.”

ORGANIZATIONAL AWARD: Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad)

The EDIE Organizational Award for 2016 is awarded to IES Abroad. Over the past few years, IES Abroad has developed a plan to specifically target diverse and underrepresented students, working to better reach, fund and prepare students for their programs abroad. This plan, the Initiative to Diversify Education Abroad (IDEA), is approached in three ways: recruiting, advising and leadership. By fostering the connections between underrepresented students and their study abroad offices, IES Abroad has seen a 63% rise in students of color enrolling in their study abroad programs since 2010-2011, making up 23% of their 6,000 participants. This has been accomplished by starting a diverse faculty initiative, creating targeted outreach materials for students and parents of diverse backgrounds and taking a leadership role in diversifying international education, which includes being a part of the Diversity Abroad Conference since 2012.

Gretchen Cook-Anderson, the Director of Diversity Recruitment & Advising for IES Abroad, said on the organization's behalf: “At IES Abroad, we’re creating global leaders. In making study abroad more accessible, we hope that many more students of all backgrounds will join the growing ranks of global citizens who are leading change around the world. So, we couldn’t be happier or more honored to have our years-long work to diversify education abroad recognized by our peers with this EDIE Award.”

Diversity Abroad is committed to recognizing noteworthy efforts in advancing diversity and inclusive excellence within international education; the 2016 EDIE Award recipients exemplify these efforts. Andrew Gordon, Founder and President of Diversity Abroad, said this on behalf of the winners: “Global learning is an essential aspect of a quality education for those who will be successful in the 21st Century. Creating equitable access to international educational opportunities for diverse and underrepresented students has been a goal for many years. The awardees have demonstrated that with innovative thinking, persistence, and a commitment to serving all students, this shared goal is achievable. I applaud the recipients for their accomplishments.”
