Country Diversity Climate Notes
Share |

This one-stop resource gives Diversity Network members an overview of issues of the discrimination, equality and racism in countries where their students study. Here, advisors can search by country to obtain information on the climate for women, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ community, and religious or ethnic/racial minorities.

The Country Diversity Climate Notes page will provide a valuable tool for faculty and staff who advise diverse and underrepresented students. Quick and easy searches in our database will yield valuable, up-to-date information about minority groups in specific countries. This helpful resource is geared toward time-stressed advisors working to recruit, retain and support diverse and underrepresented students for education abroad.

Although the nature of the Country Diversity Climate Notes is inherently cautionary in tone, it is worth mentioning that the potential gains to be had from study abroad almost always outweigh the potential drawbacks, especially if those cross-cultural challenges translate into student strengths, as so often occurs. However, this does not mean that students should tolerate bigotry or discrimination. Advisors should counsel students to be in regular communication with their study abroad program counselors and to seek assistance should they be discriminated against or worse during their time abroad.

In addition to serving as a provider of information, the Diversity Network hopes to serve as a clearinghouse of information regarding student experiences with diversity in the given countries.
