Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) Awards

Each year, through the Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) Awards, Diversity Abroad celebrates outstanding institutions, organizations, and individuals who have developed inclusive practices that foster diversity and inclusion in international education, and promote an inclusive environment for international students on campus. Awardees are announced at the Annual Diversity Abroad Conference.

Institutional/Organizational Awards

The Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) Awards for organizations and institutions highlight outstanding achievements of institutions and organizations that have developed practices that either foster diversity and inclusion in international education and exchange or promote an inclusive environment for international students on campus. The awards recognize innovation and excellence in the following categories: Outreach, Marketing, and Recruitment; Programming (curriculum/co-curricular); Student Support; Financial Support; Diversity & Inclusion Champion; and Organizational Excellence.

Selected by a review committee representing a diversity of student & professional perspectives in the field, the Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education Awards are unique in their focus on recognizing exemplary practices at the institutional/organizational level that increase access and foster diversity and inclusion in international education and exchange. The institutional/organizational awards are open to educational institutions and international education organizations, (e.g., institutions of higher education, post-secondary institutions, associations, education abroad providers, fellowship programs, foundations, etc) both in the U.S. and abroad. In either case, excellence in diversity & inclusion should permeate a significant portion of the organization or institution.

Nominated institutions/organizations are encouraged to have at least one representative registered for the Annual Diversity Abroad Conference by the end of the Early Bird Registration period.

Institutional/Organizational Award Categories

  • Outreach, Marketing, and Recruitment
Outreach, marketing, and recruitment are three areas by which professionals manage the message about what global opportunities can offer students. This award recognizes excellence, at the institutional/organizational level, in messaging and methods that resonate with and have led to proven results in attracting students from diverse & underrepresented backgrounds to global opportunities

  • Programming (curriculum/co-curricular)
Students are looking for ways to make study abroad applicable to their current academic, professional, and personal aspirations. This award recognizes excellence, at the institutional/organizational level, in developing inclusive curricular and co-curricular activities that appeal to students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds in global opportunities.

  • Student Support
Ensuring that students from diverse & underrepresented backgrounds have relevant information during pre-departure, actively engage while abroad, and are provided with opportunities to reflect on their experiences when they return is critical to the success of global programming efforts. This award recognizes excellence, at the institutional/organizational level, in the implementation of inclusive practices for advising and support of diverse and underrepresented students before, on-site, and after participating in global experiences.

  • Financial Support
Funding is the most frequently cited concern of students who consider global opportunities; however, developing strategies for making education abroad more financially feasible is not limited to scholarship & grants. This award recognizes excellence, at the organizational/institutional level, in implementing systems to make global opportunities financially feasible for more students, including coordinated financial aid, informational workshops, support for funding applications, and collaboration with other campus/organizational units.

  • International Student Success
As the number of international students rises on many college campuses across the country, the international education field continues its work to identify effective support systems to create a welcoming climate for these students. This award recognizes excellence, at the institutional/organizational level, in fostering an inclusive climate that supports international students as integral members of the campus community and encourages meaningful interactions among all students.

  • Diversity & Inclusion Champion (Overall)
The Diversity & inclusion Champion Award recognizes an institution/organization that exemplifies the vision and ideals of Diversity Abroad to support diversity & inclusive excellence in global education. The recipient of this award will be recognized as a leader within the field of International Education in championing Access, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in global education on a broad scale.

  • Organizational Excellence
Aside from the direct work international educators do to reach and support diverse and underrepresented students, the goal of inclusive excellence also impacts the climate within organizations and offices. The field of international education is not nearly as diverse as the students it serves. This award will recognize an institution/organization that demonstrates inclusive excellence with respect to hiring practices, training and development, career advancement, mentorship, and allyship within international education.
