Session I: US Diversity 101: What Every On-Site Team Member Should Know
Diverse students do study abroad. Institutions of higher education in the US, overseas, and program providers must be inclusive in their practices and prepared to effectively support students from diverse backgrounds. The goal for this session is to provide a broad overview of diversity in the United States, with focus on specific aspects of identity to be considered when students from diverse backgrounds are abroad. Onsite Advisors, Program Managers, and Faculty Leaders are amongst those who can benefit from a better understanding of the (potential) unique challenges diverse students face while studying abroad. Included will be a discussion of topics like mental health, racism/discrimination, sexual behavior, and the role that culture and identity play in diverse students’ overall experience.
Session II: Guideline Ten | In-Country Support, Reporting, & Advising
Study abroad professionals know that support for students does not end when the student boards the plane to their study abroad location. On-site support for students is the hallmark of a quality program. Diverse students may face unique concerns when they are in-country that other students may not. Ensuring that diverse students are aware of these concerns and have the support they need on-site is important to facilitating a positive learning experience while abroad.
Who Should Attend?
Intended for professionals interested in developing the skills and expertise needed to increase capacity and serve more diverse student populations in education abroad, this high-impact half-day training will focus on expanding knowledge around diverse US populations, and providing effective in-country support to students from all backgrounds.
