Inclusive Learning Institute

April 19 -20, 2021 | Virtual

The Inclusive Learning Institute, by Diversity Abroad, is an immersive learning and development event that convenes faculty and other education professionals to explore the intersection of global engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and learning. Attendees will engage in critical discussions, share best practices and build networks to support student success, through advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities.

Faculty play a critical role in advancing student success. As higher education institutions become more globally diverse, faculty are positioned to both advance diversity, equity and inclusion in and through their work. Additionally as faculty ranks diversify, faculty are positioned to foster a climate of inclusion and belonging to support the success of colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Join us this spring for the 2021 Inclusive Learning Institute, being held virtually, as we explore questions such as:

  • How do faculty foster a climate of inclusion and belonging in globally diverse in-person or virtual classrooms?
  • What is the role of faculty in fostering inclusive excellence in education abroad?
  • Given that global education doesn’t require mobility, how can faculty promote opportunities for inclusive global learning at home?
  • How can faculty support their domestic and international colleagues from diverse backgrounds?

These questions and more will be addressed during the 2021 Inclusive Learning Institute.

SESSION TOPICS

Centering Equity and Inclusion in Global Learning

Teaching and learning is at the heart of the academy. As higher education strives to advance equity and inclusion in all aspects of its work, how does this focus impact global learning? This session sets the tone for establishing proper conditions and context for assisting faculty in centering equity and inclusion in global learning. Presenters will discuss concepts such as cultural relativism and more expansive considerations for inclusion.

Embodying Anti-Racism in Education Abroad Programming

With the field a buzz to incorporate more anti-racist work into education, it is critical that faculty and staff leading programs abroad to ask themselves questions such as: What does it mean to embody anti-racism in education abroad? How might we do that? What do we need to consider when crafting intentionally anti-racist programming? This session will create a space for faculty and program leaders to examine these and other essential questions for embodying anti-racism in education abroad programming.

Designing Inclusive Curriculum for Globally Diverse Classrooms

Today's classrooms are more diverse than ever before, racially, ethically, globally and otherwise. Presenters will share tools and theoretical frameworks that can be used with different stakeholders to design inclusive curriculums for globally diverse classrooms. Successful practices and insights, supported by experience and research within equity, racial equity, and inclusive pedagogy will frame this session.

Health, Wellness, and Self-Care for BIPOC Faculty Leading Programs Abroad

Much emphasis is placed on inclusive support for Black and Indigenous students of Color before, during and after participating in learning programs abroad. There has been less focus, however, on health, wellness and self-care for BIPOC faculty and professionals leading programs abroad. This session will specifically provide tools for self-care and reflection specifically for Black, Indigenous, faculty of color leading programs abroad as well as tips for allies who aim to support their colleagues.

Elevating Global Learning Success at Minority Serving Institutions

As we seek to increase justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in international education, elevating global learning at institutions intentional about serving students of color provides lessons that benefit our whole industry. This session will highlight champions of this work in a candid discussion about innovative strategies at institutions intentional about de-minoritizing their students.

Supporting International Student & Scholar Success

Due to Trump era policies and the impact of the coronavirus, the number of international students and scholars (ISS) coming to the United States has dropped significantly, with many ISS concerned for their safety in coming to the U.S. Recognizinging how important it is now more than ever to foster a sense of belonging and security, the presenters share their expertise in how faculty and staff can support ISS success. Through lecture, dialogue, and activities, the presenters will use their combined experiences to help us better understand what we need in order to cultivate a thriving community for international students and scholars on our campuses.

Achieving Equity in Virtual Global Learning

With the emergence of innovative virtual global learning over the past year the field is positioned to support a greater number of students in having access to global educational opportunities. However, how are we ensuring that these opportunities are equitable for all? This session will share examples of best practices used to achieve equity in virtual learning that are used by faculty and staff alike.

Mind the Gap: Bridging Intercultural and Diversity & Inclusion Learning Objectives in Global Education

Intercultural and Diversity & Inclusion work have often been pitted against each other. There are significant opportunities for growth and development offered by bridging intercultural and diversity & inclusion learning objectives in global education. In this session we will learn from teams at two very different institution types who are minding this gap with innovative and meaningful practices.

Living with the Learning - Final Reflection & Closing Remarks
