2022 Inclusive Learning Institute - April 25 & 26

Faculty play a critical role in advancing student success. As higher education institutions become more globally diverse, faculty are positioned to both advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in and through their work. Additionally as faculty ranks diversify, faculty are positioned to foster a climate of inclusion and belonging to support the success of colleagues from diverse backgrounds. 

The Inclusive Learning Institute, by Diversity Abroad, is an immersive learning and development event that convenes faculty and other education professionals to explore the intersection of global engagement, diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning. Attendees will engage in critical discussions, share best practices, and build networks to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities. 

Attendees will also gain access to the ILI22 Hub the week before ILI22. The ILI22 Hub consists of resources, learning materials, and networking opportunities to expand beyond the two-day event. All sessions will be recorded and posted to the ILI22 Hub for attendees to revisit up to a month after the event.

Join us this spring for the 2022 Inclusive Learning Institute (ILI22), as we explore questions such as: 

  • How do faculty foster a climate of inclusion and belonging in globally diverse in-person or virtual classrooms? 
  • What is the role of faculty in fostering inclusive excellence in global education?
  • How can faculty promote opportunities for inclusive global learning at home?
  • How can faculty support their domestic and international colleagues from diverse backgrounds?

These questions and more will be addressed during ILI22. 


The Inclusive Learning Institute is designed for professionals from faculty and diversity leaders to student success and international educators. Attendees come to the Inclusive Learning Institute from the following types of offices/organizations:

Join us to kick off the second annual Inclusive Learning Institute! This session will provide an overview of the institute and how to make the most of this two-day immersive experience. We are excited to engage in critical discussions, share best practices and build networks to support student success, through advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities.
Global learning is often predicated on better understanding difference and finding meaningful connections across culture and geography. The problem, though, is that many of us aren’t quite sure how to do this given our own complex identities and the long-standing inequities we travel through. This workshop will help us situate global learning within these debates and offer skills and tools for practitioners to practice and take back to their contexts.

This workshop will explore how international education possesses a unique gateway to introduce the ways in which marginalization and systemic oppression exist and interact both locally and globally, filling a gap at times found in DEI initiatives that are focused solely on the local context.

This workshop will outline key tenants of asset-based pedagogies, exploring how we can apply these concepts to global learning. Presenters will explore best practices to center students' cultures and identities in teaching and learning, while using rigorous and relevant curriculum and anti-oppressive teaching practices.

Three years into the global pandemic, much emphasis is placed on wellness and support across the field and while there have been temporary changes in policies, there is a push to return to how things were before the pandemic and often remains inflexible.

This interactive session will provide tools, advocacy tips, and examine best practices for self-care and reflection for leaders in International Education specifically underrepresented demographics leading programs or offices, as well as tips for allies who aim to support their colleagues.

Kick off day two with a brief reflection and overview for what to expect from the remaining sessions.
In order to support the mental and physical wellbeing of our international students and scholars (ISS), we have an obligation as international educators to engage them in dialogue about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States. Furthermore, there is much that we can learn from the knowledge, perspectives, and experiences of our ISS community on DEI issues from a global frame. In this workshop, presenters will outline best practices to address and incorporate conversations on identity, power, privilege, and oppression in a U.S. context with international students and scholars. Through interactive exercises, lecture, and small group conversation, participants will understand the value of holding these dialogues, and leave with tools as to how to implement such practices at their institutions.

Presenters will outline opportunities that exist within our own communities while also discussing the opportunities and implications of virtual learning opportunities, to help our students engage with difference while understanding the diversity of experiences within one's own community.
