2022 Inclusive Learning Institute - April 25 & 26

Faculty play a critical role in advancing student success. As higher education institutions become more globally diverse, faculty are positioned to both advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in and through their work. Additionally as faculty ranks diversify, faculty are positioned to foster a climate of inclusion and belonging to support the success of colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

The Inclusive Learning Institute, by Diversity Abroad, is an immersive learning and development event that convenes faculty and other education professionals to explore the intersection of global engagement, diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning. Attendees will engage in critical discussions, share best practices, and build networks to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities.

Attendees will also gain access to the ILI22 Hub the week before ILI22. The ILI22 Hub consists of resources, learning materials, and networking opportunities to expand beyond the two-day event. All sessions will be recorded and posted to the ILI22 Hub for attendees to revisit up to a month after the event.

Join us this spring for the 2022 Inclusive Learning Institute (ILI22), as we explore questions such as:

  • How do faculty foster a climate of inclusion and belonging in globally diverse in-person or virtual classrooms?
  • What is the role of faculty in fostering inclusive excellence in global education?
  • How can faculty promote opportunities for inclusive global learning at home?
  • How can faculty support their domestic and international colleagues from diverse backgrounds?

These questions and more will be addressed during ILI22.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Monday, April 25, 2022

Join us to kick off the second annual Inclusive Learning Institute! This session will provide an overview of the institute and how to make the most of this two-day immersive experience. We are excited to engage in critical discussions, share best practices and build networks to support student success, through advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities.
Global learning is often predicated on better understanding difference and finding meaningful connections across culture and geography. The problem, though, is that many of us aren’t quite sure how to do this given our own complex identities and the long-standing inequities we travel through. This workshop will help us situate global learning within these debates and offer skills and tools for practitioners to practice and take back to their contexts.

Presenters:
Anu Taranath, Ph.D., - Teaching Professor, University of Washington, Seattle
Sumie Song, Ph.D., - Director of Global Education & Associate Professor, North Park University
We are excited to welcome prominent scholars, authors, and educators, Dr. Cynthia Miller-Idriss and Dr. Michael Benitez Jr. to discuss global diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, activism, and teaching.

Speakers:
Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Ph.D. - Professor and Director, Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL), American University
Michael Benitez Jr., Ph.D. - Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, and Associate Professor of Multicultural Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver
Moderator
Lily Lopez-Mcgee, Ph.D. - Executive Director of Diversity Abroad
This workshop will explore how international education possesses a unique gateway to introduce the ways in which marginalization and systemic oppression exist and interact both locally and globally, filling a gap at times found in DEI initiatives that are focused solely on the local context.

Presenters:
Sara Bularzik - Doctoral Candidate,University of Denver
Emma Wright (she/her) - Manager of Global Learning and Engagement, Ryerson University (renaming in process)
This workshop will outline key tenants of asset-based pedagogies, exploring how we can apply these concepts to global learning. Presenters will explore best practices to center students' cultures and identities in teaching and learning, while using rigorous and relevant curriculum and anti-oppressive teaching practices.

Presenters:
Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn, MA, MPA - Manager of Education, Gallaudet University
Tasha Willis, Ed.D., - Assistant Professor, California State Los Angeles
Three years into the global pandemic, much emphasis is placed on wellness and support across the field and while there have been temporary changes in policies, there is a push to return to how things were before the pandemic and often remains inflexible.

This interactive session will provide tools, advocacy tips, and examine best practices for self-care and reflection for leaders in International Education specifically underrepresented demographics leading programs or offices, as well as tips for allies who aim to support their colleagues.

Presenters:
Adriana Smith - Regional Manager, American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)
Christina Thompson - Director of Partnership Development and Diversity Initiatives, Barcelona SAE
Nicole Webster, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of Youth and International Development and African Studies, Pennsylvania State University

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

Kick off day two with a brief reflection and overview for what to expect from the remaining sessions.
In order to support the mental and physical wellbeing of our international students and scholars (ISS), we have an obligation as international educators to engage them in dialogue about issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States. Furthermore, there is much that we can learn from the knowledge, perspectives, and experiences of our ISS community on DEI issues from a global frame. In this workshop, presenters will outline best practices to address and incorporate conversations on identity, power, privilege, and oppression in a U.S. context with international students and scholars. Through interactive exercises, lecture, and small group conversation, participants will understand the value of holding these dialogues, and leave with tools as to how to implement such practices at their institutions.

Presenters
Jeremy Gombin-Sperling - Diversity and Inclusion Liaison, Fulbright Programs in the Western Hemisphere
Jennifer Ready - Senior International Student Advisor, New York University
Felix Wang, Ph.D. - Assistant Dean, Honors College, James Madison University
What does it mean to embody inclusive excellence in education abroad? What do we need to consider when crafting intentionally inclusive programming that positively impacts not only our students, but also the communities surrounding the locations where our programs take place? This session will create a space for faculty and program leaders to examine these and other essential questions for embodying inclusive excellence in education abroad.

Presenters
Opal Bartzis, Ed.D. - Executive Director of Education Abroad, Michigan State University
Anjam Chaudhary - Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Program Coordinator for International Studies and Programs, Michigan State University
Marsha McGriff, Ed.D. - Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Advisor to the President, University of Florida
Mary Stephenson - Director, Groups Scholars Program, Indiana University
This moderated discussion welcomes leaders who straddle faculty and administrative roles, working to support and train faculty in fostering globally inclusive curriculum and programming. Please join us to learn about initiatives at their institutions and what they are doing to their strategies and frameworks for embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, and global learning in teaching.

Jane Chin Davidson, Ph.D. - Professor, Department of Art and Design & Faculty Fellow for DEI in Teaching, California State University, San Bernardino
Oscar Felix, Ph.D. - Assistant Professor, School of Education & Associate Vice President, Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Colorado State University

Anthony F. Lemieux, Ph.D. - Professor & Founding Co-Director of the Atlanta Global Studies Center, Georgia State University
