Join us to kick off the third annual Inclusive Learning Institute! This session will provide an overview of the institute and how to make the most of this three-day immersive experience. We are excited to engage in critical discussions, share best practices and build networks to support student success, through advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and global engagement in pedagogy, curriculum, and co-curricular activities.

This session centers on the development of a Foundations of International Higher Education course that reflects DEI and global learning goals. Presenters will discuss drawing from their expertise in IHE and DEI in their conceptualization of the course, and the pedagogical, curricular, and co-curricular approaches and activities utilized to enhance practitioner preparation. Participants will examine their own opportunities to engage in curriculum development that integrates inclusive practices.

Students in STEM disciplines often have limited opportunities to study abroad. In identifying and designing programs to fit the needs of these students, international educators have a unique opportunity to recruit underrepresented students while integrating JEDI themes into the curricula. This session will address program examples and tools to incorporate curricular and co-curricular elements reflecting difference and diversity appropriate to the field of study and local context.

Kick off day two with a brief reflection and overview for what to expect from the remaining sessions.

Educators often struggle to develop meaningfully antiracist pedagogy, particularly while addressing intracohort conflict abroad. We incorporate data from internship programs in The Gambia and China along with research interviews among international internship providers to explore tools to prevent and mitigate identity-based harm abroad. We discuss pre-departure preparation, student reflection, and adjusting caucus-based discussion groups to promote inclusive excellence abroad.

Online global learning enables us to bring intercultural competencies to a broader and more diverse audience. But how do we ensure that experience supports every learner? This session will interactively explore strategies employed in serving a large, diverse audience of online global learners.

Currently, research is scantly focused on the accomplishments and contributions of Black U.S. faculty and Black international faculty employed at predominantly White universities in the United States. To begin building academic literature on this topic, a pilot study was conducted in 2022 at a predominantly White, Midwesterner public university in the United State to uncover the accomplishments and contributions of Black U.S. faculty and Black international faculty at a predominantly White, Midwesterner public university in the United States, along with the strategies they identified to enhance the recruitment, retention and academic success of such faculty at predominantly White universities in the United States.

Utilizing a mixed-method approach, 24 Black faculty were surveyed via Qualtrics to gain insights into their teaching, service, and research and factors that have facilitated their academic growth and success. Descriptive statistics were conducted on the close-ended responses using STATA MP14. A content analysis was also performed on the open-ended responses.

The findings from this pilot study will share specific examples regarding how Black faculty from the U.S. and Black faculty from international countries have connected with international and U.S students, and developed academic efforts in the areas of teaching, research, and service that have promoted global understanding, collaboration, and engagement on such topics as global health issues, diversity and inclusion, and anti-racism.

Last, next steps will be offered by the Black faculty regarding creating supportive and inclusive environments for current and future Black faculty to thrive in at predominantly White, universities in the United States.

This session will conclude with a brief question and answer session with the audience.
