Access, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity (AIDE) Roadmap Guideline #4 - Professional Development & Staffing

Students from diverse backgrounds may require additional support and advising mechanisms for making study abroad accessible. The training and support that staff receive to support and advise diverse students is essential to diversifying the students going abroad and in developing inclusive programming. Training and resources that support staff development help ensure that diverse students receive relevant messaging about the importance of study abroad and are supported as they pursue study abroad opportunities. Generally, this means implementing professional development opportunities and practices that prepare the staff and professionals (who engage with students at all levels of the conversation) to work with diverse student populations.

Additionally, membership to organizations and associations often provides institutions and their staff/faculty with tools and resources that may not be accessible to the public. Holding membership to these kinds of entities may provide staff/faculty with the additional resources and training they need to support students from diverse backgrounds in study abroad.
